Salvage Operations

SOLAR I IN UPRIGHT POSITION
September 1, 2006 9:20 AM

Fukada Marine and Salvage Works' vessel the Shinsei Maru has already found MT Solar 1. The vessel was found in an "upright position" and "listing slightly on the right side." The sensors of Shinsei Maru found the tanker 640 meters down about 13 nautical miles southwest of Guimaras Island. The remotely-operated vehicle (ROV) onboard the Maru confirmed the location of Solar 1 which was earlier detected by sensors of ships belonging to the National Mapping and Resource Information Authority (NAMRIA).

It was likewise confirmed that there was no more oil leaking from the vessel although there were signs of an earlier leakage, as indicated by a crack at the ship's starboard side (right). The ROV will conduct further surveys to examine the ship.
