SHINSEI MARU ARRIVES

Japanese ship Shinsei Maru arrived at Iloilo on August 30 at around 4:00 PM. This 51-meter long scientific research vessel is expected to conduct a through search of the area where M/T Solar 1 sank, using its state-of-the art remote operated vehicle (ROV) for deep sea operation. Because of the depth of the sink site (established at 640 meters), it has been difficult to ascertain Solar 1's position. The ROV has a 2,000 meter long umbilical cord that will allow it to determine Solar 1's precise location and position, hence the need for Shin Sei Maru and her ROV.

After Shinsei Maru completes her survey, the result will determine the next and best course of action to be taken with regard to Solar 1.

The arrival of Shinsei Maru underscores Petron's commitment to take concrete measures in providing a long-term solution to the problem of the sunken tanker.
