Salvage Operations

Initial Response

Addressing the problem of the sunken vessel is one of our top priorities. To this end, Petron has secured the services of a third party contractor who will do the following:

  • Confirm exact location and position
  • Inspect condition of vessel
  • Evaluate options based on expert advice

To identify the exact location and position of the vessel, a sonar sweep of the area is required. The research vessel of NAMRIA has already conducted a sonar sweep covering 10,000 square kilometers, and it has determined the location of the vessel.

Further, Petron is bringing in sonar equipment that can even more precisely determine the location and position of the vessel.

The salvage company that was engaged to locate the vessel and determine its condition is Fukada Salvage & Marine Works Co. Ltd. Fukada is sending in the Shinsei Maru with a remote operated vehicle, the Hakuyo 2000. The vessel left Okinawa last Saturday (1:00 p.m. Manila time) and is expected to arrive Wednesday afternoon or Thursday morning, weather permitting.

Once the sonar equipment has completed the task of verifying the location of the sunken vessel, the ROV will determine the extent of damage and determine our next course of action.
