Local residents are excited over the prospects
of the establishment of the Petron Library Hub in the town of Jordan, Guimaras. With construction on-going,
the hub is expected to be the central repository of knowledge in the island province.
The Library Hub in Brgy. San Miguel in Jordan
has received an initial 36,000 books from the San Francisco Public Library (USA) and Bato Balani Foundation. These
will be available to schools within the area, which can borrow them for their library or reading corner for 30 days.
“Long have we been dreaming of
this library for our children and the people of Guimaras and now Petron is giving us this opportunity to experience
this kind of project,” Guimaras School Superintendent Meriem Collado said.
The Petron Library Hub is a
multi-partnership effort involving the private sector, the Petron Foundation, Saudi Aramco, Petron Dealers Association,
the people and province of Guimaras and the Department of Education.
During the ground-breaking
ceremonies recently, children of the nearby San Miguel Elementary School promised to take good care of the
library hub and to study even harder now that they have a new resource for learning. To show their gratitude,
the school children likewise gave dance numbers much to the pleasure of the guests.
Meanwhile, the company
also started the construction of a 4-classroom Petron School on the island.
The Petron School will
have new sets of chairs, electric fans, adequate lighting and clean restrooms for boys and girls. This school
will also have a training component for members of the Parent-Teacher-Community Associations, as well as
other support programs for the community.
The Petron Library Hub and
the Petron School are currently being built and are expected to be completed in time for the opening of classes
in June.
