EMPLOYEE VOLUNTEERS LEAD DEBRIS HAULING OPERATIONS
September 7, 2006

The Petron family's inherent spirit of volunteerism carries on as environmental management efforts in Guimaras entered yet another phase.

The arrival of seven (7) Petron-contracted hauling trucks at Guimaras on September 5 signaled the beginning of debris transfer operations under the Ligtas Guimaras Program. These trucks will haul collected oil and waste from different clean-up sites to Cabalagnan wharf, where an LCT (landing craft tanker) that serves as temporary debris storage is moored. Top priority in the hauling operations are barangays with evacuees.

Petron employee volunteers actively supervise and participate in this activity.

The volunteers prepare lunch and snack packages consisting of about 4 cups of rice, 1 viand, 1 fruit, 2 sandwiches, and 4 bottles of water every morning for the workers. They also aid in renting jeepneys and other people-movers to bring workers to and from activity sites, while helping ensure that each vehicle has 2 military escorts for security purposes. Petron volunteers likewise help out in the accounting of debris drums and sacks for hauling, as well as in ensuring that all debris containers are leak-free.

At present, a total of forty two (42) employee volunteers are deployed in Guimaras and Iloilo as clean-up, containment, and rehabilitation efforts in these areas progress to its first month. Most of them have barely seen home in weeks.

"We are truly proud of and touched by our employee volunteers," said Petron Foundation Executive Director Malu Erni. "They stay on to help out purely on their own volition. These acts of selflessness provide immense hope that we will all see this situation through sooner that we may think."
